A 33-year-old software engineer fell victim to a part-time job scam after being promised easy earnings for rating hotels online. Initially, he was paid Rs 1,500 but later he lost over Rs 18 lakh.
The engineer received a WhatsApp message offering a part-time job to rate hotels, purportedly for a company promoting hotels. Believing it to be genuine, he followed instructions, receiving Rs 200 for each rating.
Then, he was enticed into investing more money in a ‘paid task’ scheme through Telegram, where he could see apparent profits in a virtual wallet.
Eventually, he invested Rs 18.34 lakh but couldn’t transfer his earnings to his bank account, realizing he had been scammed.
The surge in complaints highlights the growing number of scams targeting people looking for part-time jobs.
With India’s unemployment rate exceeding 8%, higher than the global average of 5.8%, more people are turning to online opportunities for extra income.
Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of this desperation, leading to a rise in online fraud targeting uninformed job seekers.
